I’ve finished up another two sessions in the ACR and have all sax parts for Ornithology recorded. In a similar fashion to Yardbird, I recorded each melodic phrase on its own. This time, however, I plan to spread these melodic fragments throughout the piece, lending to the more spaced-out nature of an ambient track. I also recorded two-note cells and other smaller fragments to use as extra material for a second, pitched up saxophone, to add to the texture of the track.
Upon further consideration, I have decided swap Blues For Alice for K.C. Blues, since the piece is easier to play on such short notice. As for the genre, I feel as though the piece lends itself well to disco. It would be interesting to see how different the melody sounds with straight rhythm as opposed to swung rhythm. What’s more, I can still incorporate strings as they are frequently used in this genre.
Regarding performance, I decided to play a bit tighter rhythmically then what I did on Yardbird as to make the track more danceable.
However, I did a similar approach to recording and editing K.C. to how I did Yardbird. I recorded myself going through the chord progression multiple times, sometimes following the established melody, other times completely improvising material on the spot. I then selected sections from each take to create the most polished version of what I envisioned, which seems fitting for a more polished, pop-infused genre such as disco.
